ABOUT THE FOUNDER
KALI "KO" MEQUINONOAG REIS
Citizen of the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe
Kali "KO" is the first Indigenous Woman fighter to become a World Boxing Champion, in addition to being the first Recipient of the Rhode Island Community Hero Award, and being inducted into the North American Indigenous Athletic Hall of Fame in January 2022. She has received the key to the city in her hometown of East Providence, Rhode Island and is the proud recipient of the “Misty Upham Award” which was presented at the 2022 Red Nation International Film Festival's tribute award ceremony.
During her boxing career, she has attained six World Titles in two weight classes, the World Boxing Association & Super Lightweight World titles in 2021/2022. The International Boxing Association's UBF & WBC Middleweight titles 2015/2016. Kali’s win of the WBC Middleweight World Title made history as the first world title fought in New Zealand. Kali also made history when she participated in HBO's first ever womens televised bout in 2018.
In 2021, Kali made her acting debut in the lead role of
Catch the Fair One; which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. She was also a writer on the film, which highlights one of Kali’s causes, the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women epidemic. The film earned
a Special Jury Mention award at the Tribeca film festival.
In March that same year, Reis was nominated for an Indie Film Spirit Award for Best Female Lead Actress. She also won the Best Actress award at the Newport Beach Film Festival 2021. After its release in February 2022, Reis was nominated for Breakthrough Performer at the 2022 Gotham awards.
Reis is most widely known for her role in True Detective: Night Country. She stars opposite two time academy award winner Jodie Foster in the fourth season of HBO’s anthology series. Kali portrays ‘Evangeline Navarro’, a half Dominican half Inuit detective turned Alaska State Trooper ex Marine. Kali was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her
work in True Detective. Kali was also nominated for a Critics Choice and Golden Globe award for best supporting actress in a limited series. Kali has also been cast in the second installment of Taylor Sheridans' Wind River, titled Wind River: Next Chapter. Most recently, Kali was featured Asphalt City which premiered March 29, 2024 and is also featured in the film Mercy with Chris Pratt & Rebecca Ferguson, set to be released in 2025.
Being of mixed race, Reis is extremely proud of her Native/Indigenous and Cape Verdean roots. She uses boxing and acting as a platform to spread awareness on various issues such as the MMIW, Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women. Kali teamed up with Founder & Executive Director Jordan Whetstone of the Rising Hearts Organization to run the NYC Marathon Nov 3, 2024 to bring awareness to Missing & Murdered Indigenous Relatives, and raise funds for the "You Are Loved" program which provides assistance for Victims & families of this epidemic. Living up to her given name Mequinonoag [Many Feathers/Many Talents], Kali is a certified Motorcycle/Small Engines Technician and has worked as a Residential Counselor since 2009. She has found healing in sharing her story & mentoring troubled youth, as well as speaking to various communities in hopes of being a positive example. “Many Feathers” Kali Reis aspires to continue finding ways to give a “voice to the voiceless”, whether it be fighting inside or outside of the ring or even in front of a camera, telling OUR STORIES. She won’t “stop until that bell rings”!
“Never throw in the towel no matter what punches life throws at you”. - Kali Reis
